1) Heat loss: Acually if you search the web you can find a couple of demo programs like Wrightsoft that will let you do a ranch or two story home for free. This needs to be done to tell what size geothermal unit you need to do the job. Not spending enough time on heat loss calculation is one of the top mistakes. 12,000 BTUs per hour is one ton of capacity. 400 cubic feet per minute (CFM) per ton is the standard amount of air flow needed. Sometimes you will have a heat loss of a house that is between a say a four ton unit and a larger six ton unit and you have to make a decision between installing a small unit that will need to use the electric heat strip at times, but have a smaller and cheaper loop field and unit or the larger unit that will produce plenty of BTUs but have a larger and more expensive loop field and unit. Initial installation cost and operating cost are important considerations in selecting equipment.
After you know what geothermal unit your using you will then know what duct work, how many volts, AMPS, and loop size or water flow you need.

2) Electrical hook up: Possible to do yourself, but should be done by an electrition.
The model of the unit and codes determine the amperage of breakers and wire size you will need. Make sure you have enough room in your breaker box for more circuits, if not you may have to add another box. Determine the most direct root to run the wires from the breaker box to the heat pump. You may have to drill tru floor joists to keep the wires in the floor or ceiling.

3) Water well or loop system: It is possible 'depending where you live' to install a horizontal loop yourself. Usually about a 600 ft roll of 3/4" geo pipe per ton of unit. The 3/4" geo pipe is what will be streched out in a 6' deep by 3' wide 100' long trench with 8' in between trenches.
If you have to go to a vertical loop make sure you get someone that is qualified. The ground loop could be the most expensive part of the geothermal installation.

4) Duct work or other delivery system: With a few hand tools you can cut your own duct work or even install your own in floor. A 1" Ductboard Shiplap Kit for a few hundred dollars to cut your duct board, duct stapler. Also rip saw and sawsall to cut holes for registers and grills.
